Mount Napulak: The Lure of the Unreachable

Mount Napulak, towering majestically in Barangay Tigbanaba, commands attention with its prominent peaks that create a breathtaking backdrop against the sky. This natural wonder is the highest mountain in the area, reaching an impressive elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level. Its distinct shape, often likened to a woman’s breast, adds to its allure. At its pinnacle, a massive coral rock, resembling a two-story building, awaits trekkers, offering a captivating vista of the surrounding city and the patchwork of mountains stretching into the neighboring Antique Province. The journey to Mount Napulak is a true adventure, taking trekkers through lush, virgin forests and immersing them in the region’s abundant wildlife. Walking tours in the foothills introduce visitors to the diverse flora and fauna that call this area home. While the ascent to the mountain’s peaks is a rewarding endeavor, it’s reserved for the experienced and physically fit.

As hikers venture higher, they transition from highland terrain to the mystique of cloud-covered peaks, and along the way, they encounter the picturesque farmlands and villages of local inhabitants, creating ample opportunities for capturing stunning photographs. To conquer Mount Napulak, one can embark on several possible routes. The journey from the Poblacion to Barangay Bagay is an exhilarating 5 to 8-hour trek, while the path from the Poblacion to Barangay Tigbanaba offers a 4 to 7-hour hike. Planning ahead is crucial, and it’s advisable to book at least two days before your expedition. The Municipal Tourism Office is a valuable resource for arranging official mountain guides. Water sources are scarce on the peak, so hikers should carry adequate water containers. The mountain’s altitude results in chilly temperatures, particularly in the early morning, so proper clothing is essential for those who plan to pitch tents for an overnight stay.
